Recovering a Lost iPhone from Istanbul After Leaving Turkey
A traveller may already be home when arrangements to recover a lost item in Istanbul can begin. Derek Fan faced that distance after losing his iPhone while transiting through Istanbul Airport: he was in the United States, while the phone was with IGA Lost & Found.
The distance between a found item and its owner
Derek's loss occurred at Istanbul Airport. Once the phone was located through IGA / Istanbul Airport Lost & Found, being outside Turkey still left him with a practical problem: someone needed to complete the permitted collection locally before the device could be sent home.
This is an airport case within the wider challenge of retrieving belongings from Istanbul after a visit has ended. The authority holding the item determines whether an authorized representative can collect it.
Completing the authorization from the United States
Derek arranged a Power of Attorney through the Turkish Consulate in Miami. On 6 September 2026, he reported his consular appointment and was waiting for the required GDPR / KVKK-related documentation from Lost & Found. The consular authorization was completed on 8 September.
He could therefore take the necessary authorization steps from abroad while Ana Kurye coordinated the local collection process. The documentation needed for another traveller's item may differ.
Local collection in Istanbul
On 9 September, Ana Kurye attended Istanbul Airport. Following the airport's verification and release procedures, the iPhone was collected successfully.
Being outside Istanbul does not necessarily mean a found item must remain uncollected. Recovery through a representative depends on the relevant Lost & Found authority allowing it and accepting the required documentation.
Arranging the journey home
The recovered phone was prepared for international return, with DHL selected for the shipment. Supporting purchase or order documentation was requested where possible, the device was declared as a used personal item, and insurance and value documentation were discussed. The package was then handed to DHL.
An item that can be collected is not automatically eligible for every international shipping route. Eligibility depends on the item; batteries and electronics can require carrier-specific handling. The destination country's customs rules also need to be considered.
Customs processing and a successful return
A customs delay in the destination country involved possible duties or taxes. Those charges and customs decisions are made by the destination authorities, independently of the local collection service.
Derek confirmed that he had received his iPhone on 16 September 2026. On 28 September he shared a Google review publicly describing Ana Kurye's service as honest, efficient and reliable.

Start with the authority or location that actually holds the item. Confirm its release requirements, establish whether a representative can collect it, and then check the shipping options for the item and destination.
